Realization is setting in...
03.07.05 (12:18 am)   [edit]

Only five days left until the concert! It just now hit me...

I might freak out.

Rickey Medlocke, Johnny Van Zant, Gary Rossington

I'm really going nuts with all this. I've loved Lynyrd Skynyrd most of my life, I mean, I grew up in The South- Mama and Daddy raised me on the good stuff!

But it's only the past year or two that I've really gotten into them. I've never loved a band or singer so much. I can't explain it, I feel like I know them, not only because they're from Florida (my home-state), but I've learned a lot about their history the past year and have come to love all the band members.

I went shopping with a friend two days ago and bought three albums I didn't have, and, I just ordered three more from Amazon.com, heh.

I just counted them up: I have seven different versions of Freebird... It's one of my favorite top five songs of all time, and that's saying a lot.

I've got the demo version, original Muscle Shoals recording, original album version, outtake version, two live ones (one from '76, one from '03), and one that's labeled "acoustic."
I couldn't pick a favorite one if I had to, they're all awesome. I love the way they play it live - Billy Powell does a beautiful piano solo in it. The "acoustic" one has only the vocal part, no ten-minute guitar riff at the end, but I like it a lot. It's a slower, prettier version.

Steve & Cassie Gaines, Ronnie Van Zant,
Allen Collins, and Leon Wilkeson-

Five days to go, sweatin' out every moment!

Lynyrd Skynyrd is one of my favorite bands as well. You may also enjoy the music of a great Canadian band, Rush.

I'm obsessed. I've also recently been getting into .38 Special and Blackfoot.

Haven't heard of Rush, what do they sound like?

Personally, I love Rush. Spirit of Radio is a good song that might give you a feel of how they sound. It was one of their newer songs. I feel that their early stuff and their later stuff is really good.. They kinda dragged a bit in the middle. :-)

Thanks for the info, I'll definitely look for them, especially Spirit of Radio, next time I'm signed in to Imesh. I hope I can find it!

If you have a file-sharing program, try to find any songs by Blackfoot (namely "Train, Train" and "Highway Song") - their lead singer/guitarist was Rickey Medlocke. He played drums with Skynyrd back in the '60s, and is currently one of their lead guitarists. Blackfoot sounds a bit like Skynyrd, and you can definitely hear a guitar riff almost like that of Freebird at the end of Highway Song.

.38 Special is fronted by Ronnie and Johnny's brother, Donnie Van Zant. Their music has more of an '80s sound to it (unless you can find their older stuff, which has more of a Southern feel), but one of my favorite songs of theirs is "Rockin' Into The Night."

Hang in there Mal. Would hate for the day to come and Paddy deems you too hysterical to go to the concert.

HAA yes ma'am!!! *salutes*
Pray we can get up close! There's no reserved seating, so I hope if we get there early we can get right up front.

I wonder if I'll be able to resist pushing past the guards, jumping on stage, and taking all the band members home with me... *sadistic laughter*
