01.17.06 (3:27 am)   [edit]
I feel like writing a blog, but I'm not sure what about, so I'm just gonna let it flow out - whatever I feel like talking about. Heh, that sounded poetic didn't it?

On Sunday, we met Kelly Mason and her family for the first time in the 5+ years I've known her. It was so fun, I had the greatest time, but I was just a bit sad we hadn't done it sooner - especially since we're only 2 1/2 hours apart! We drove on over there in the early afternoon and got there just past 3, met at Cracker Barrel and had an early dinner, then went to a Glenn Miller Orchestra concert - which was awesome! I love that old '40s music. They ended the concert with a fast-paced Benny Goodman song, "All the Cats Join In" - we all loved that one, the drummer was especially great. After the concert we left for home - had to drive across Alligator Alley at night, which I didn't like the idea of none too much (even though we had a handgun with us), but the time passed pretty quickly and we got across safely! There we were, driving through the swamps in the middle of the night listening to Skynyrd's "Swamp Music" - can that be any more appropriate? On the way over, we saw at least 50 alligators sitting on the banks near the water in the Everglades.
Kelly, it was so awesome to finally meet you (and the family, I love you guys!), I can't wait to do it again!

Let's see...we did all that on Sunday the 15th, which is also Ronnie Van Zant's birthday. He'd have been 58 this year, Happy Birthday Ronnie, wish you were still with us!

On the subject of Lynyrd Skynyrd (what else?), .38andSkynyrdFan recently told me that it's been rumored that Hughie Thomasson will possibly rejoin the band. Even if it's just a rumor, that is SUCH great news! Maybe The Outlaws broke up again, which I feel bad about because I love that band too and would love to see them some day. But I love Skynyrd more, and they need that third guitarist there. Hughie is an awesome player, I really do hope he'll come back, he's got tough shoes to fill!
One more thing reguarding Skynyrd - Rickey Medlocke (who's also pursuing acting) guest starred in an episode of Nash Bridges, I think back in 2001. I just happened to search for Rickey's name in the Yahoo TV listings and lo and behold!! His episode is playing at 3AM this morning!! I can't watch it now because the cable TV is in Prancing Patrick's room and he's sleeping, but I've set the VCR to record it... hopefully it turns out good, I've been wanting to see it for so long but it's never played and I can't find it online. I hope he has a good-sized part!

STILL on the subject of music, I just got three more .38 Special albums, and the King Kong soundtrack. Haven't listened to all of them yet but I'm sure they're all awesome. King Kong, by the way, was a great movie - worthy of seeing at least once in theaters. Quite a bit far-fetched, but hey, it's a movie! It stayed true to the original movie and the graphics were impressive - Kong himself looked SO real. The sound was awesome too.

Ahh, we're going to Israel in June. I don't think it's yet hit me, because I'm not excited yet. I'm a bit nervous about going over there at a time like this, but hey, it's a once-in-a-lifetime chance and we're gonna take it! We still have to get our passports though, we'd better get that done SOON. We have a close friend, Mike, whose brother lives 15 minutes from Jerusalem. We'll stay with them for ten days and Mike will show us all around the country!! We'll only have to pay for airline tickets. That would have sapped our savings, but we recently got a home equity loan to give us a bit more freedom. Nothing major - when we move (maybe, in the next 5 years), we'll sell the house and easily pay the loan off all together.

We also might go to the Smokies before Israel, in May. We've been talking about going earlier this year (we usually go in September). Another reason to go in May is that Skynyrd will be in Cherokee, NC, mid-month (heh heh). It'd be awesome to see them up there - Cherokee isn't too far from Gatlinburg so there's no reason to pass up the chance!!

Last thing, I now have a bad cold. It just suddenly came upon me today, I felt fine yesterday?? Thankfully I was able to keep a sore throat away by gargling with Listerine every half hour. But my head is stuffed to the maximum and I have a nasal drip.. my ears are all closed up and I can't breath out of my nose. I've got Vick's Vapor Rub all over me, a Breathe Right Nasal Strip on my nose, and I took Sudafed Severe Cold Formula. I also drank some piping hot green tea, which helped a little bit. I've only just now discovered that you can also drink Arizona Tea hot. D'oh.

Wait, that wasn't the last thing. I was just thinking, Josée told me about this thing called Skype, where you can make PC-to-PC phone calls from anywhere in the world for free! She said the quality is that of a telephone, and it's not like talking on walkie-talkies either. You just need a headset with a microphone and you're all set. I ordered one last week, I hope it gets here soon because in the years I've known Josée, we've never heard each others' voice!!

I've just added two new pages to Daft & Demented - they're both under "My Interests", one for trucks and one for guitars! It took a lot more work than it looks, I spent hours looking for good pictures and picking out all my favorites. Hadn't added anything major to the site in a long time so I had to do something! Just something to note, on the Guitar page, the third guitar is the Gibson Indian - I LOVE that guitar. It's so beautiful. Rickey has that one and I could never find a decent picture of it until a couple days ago. The original picture is GI-NORMUS too! Awesome.

Okay, here's the last thing for real this time. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DEAREST A.E.!! I hope you had a totally awesome day and hopefully you'll get my card/gift in the next couple days! Sorry it's late. I love you!

Erm...here's the REAL real last thing: OMG I LUV TEH RIKAY HAWTNAS I CANT WAT TO SE3 HIM 2MOROW!!!11!!1!1 OMG WTF BBQ

OH and, Lonestar's "You're Like Coming Home" is on the radio right now. I love this song.

Hey Marita!

I'm sure I'll get more and more excited as we get closer to the trip! I just don't know what to expect. But I know it'll be awesome.

My back is better, thank you! Took 3/4 of a month to get back to normal. Still sick, but it's mainly just in my sinuses.

Getting to your emails soon I promise!

God bless you too,
Love,
Mal

I agree Mal,It would be great to have a third guitar for Skynyrd. They are a three guitar band and always have been. When they try to get along without one it just does'nt sound right. It does not sound right now and it did'nt as well in the past.Like back when Ed King left and they were stuck with only two. That short period when we would be waiting the arrival of Steve Gaines. You could hear some of it during the Gimme Back My Bullits days..(late 75-early 76).If you listen to that bootleg import thing"live in Cardiff Wales" (sometimes under other names too like cardiff peaches..etc)You can really hear the difference on the live album with only two guitars. It's the same with the line-up now too!It just aint right with two!I think Hughie would be a great choice again. It's funny cause back in those days I was just talkin about when Skynyrd was out on the road in the 70's with only two guitar players,The Outlaws were the opening act for Skynyrd at a lot of thier shows and Hughie would often come out and fill in as a third player. And another Outlaw who past,Billy Jones, would also come out and play on encores like "T for Texas".The only others I can think of who would fit the "Family Tradition" and really keep it that Skynyrd southern style would be(if Hughie could'nt do it)Ed King or Jeff Carlisi.Just one guys opinion.....Michael

Yeah, I could hear the difference in Gimme Back My Bullets. I mean, they didn't sound BAD, I LOVE that album, it just wasn't right!

I saw Skynyrd in Orlando in March - they sounded great, but it wasn't the same. I doubt there's any chance of Ed King coming back, so hopefully Hughie does. Since he played with Skynyrd back in the '70s, and Rickey played drums with them back then, they're both Skynyrd to me! I'm glad Rickey doesn't have plans of leaving, I love him and think he's the best out there to play Allen's parts.

Thank you!! I hope you don't catch it either - wash your hands a LOT, gargle with Listerine, and drink a TON of orange juice, I swear it works! Hope your wife and mom feel better.

I don't think I have the flu though (thankfully!), I never had the aches or fever, just a really stuffy head :o/

I agree totally man!!Gimme Back My Bullets is GREAT!!I will always love that one among all the others that Allen Collins was involved in.I have to say that Allen was always my favorite picker.I agree with you about Rickey probably being the best replacement thus far for Allen.Allen had a very complex choppy stucatto type of playing which is very hard to be duplicated, though Rickey has come closest so far.Ex 38 spec.picker Jeff Carlisi seems to have a similar style and was close to and learned from Allen back in the day but they also would say the same things about Randall Hall and I dont think he sounded half as good as Rickey does. When you listen to some of the old Blackefoot stuff like the album "Strikes",It seems as if Rickey would be the perfect fit.I was so excited to hear at the long weekend in Atlanta, when the Debut of "Freebird"the movie was goin on,that Rickey and Hughie were hangin around,Every body would learn that they were gonna be a part of the band!!It was very exciting news to hear and a great weekend. But unfortunatly no one will ever completely take Allen's place. But it's good to know that Rickey is the best man for the job and honors Allen by playing a lot of his parts to the best of his ability.....BTW...I was one of the very rare few who actually was blessed to see the Allen Collins Band in 1983 at a small club that is no more called Summers on the beach,Which was on the old Fort Lauderdale Strip.Allen, Leon, Billy, Randall Hall, Barry Harwood, Derek Hess, and Jimmy Doughtry. They played mostly Skynyrd material and sounded like the original raw Skynyrd stuff.I loved it cause all the times I saw the Rossington-Collins Band, the only Skynyrd tune they played was "Freebird",so It was so great to hear the guys playin all the old Skynyrd songs for the first time as a band since 1977.The only thing that I can say that was missing that night was Gary and Artimus. But still was a great night of Skynyrd music with a little ACB thrown in.What A Night!!....Peace Love and Southern Rock....God Bless You....Michael

Also, I think feet rubs help prevent colds :)

After I use Listerine, my mouth feels pretty clean, which is nice :)

I'm a huge fan of Blackfoot too, which is another reason I love seeing Rickey with Skynyrd - I'm glad he's still successful and having fun, AND... we get to see a LOT of him ;D I agree about Randall. I liked him, but he was nowhere near as good.

You've certainly been a fan a lot longer than me! Very lucky to have seen the Allen Collins Band.. I love them and Rossington-Collins too. "Don't Misunderstand Me" is a favorite! Check out Kiss Country's internet station, 99.9 Gretchen (there's a link to it on the front page) http://www.wkis.com/
They play some awesome stuff. The best country and classic country and a LOT of Southern rock. I hear Skynyrd, Blackfoot, Rossington-Collins and 38 on there all the time!

You've got some great memories. I wish I was alive to have seen the older band(s).

Are you going to Kiss Country's Chili-Cookoff? I *think* we're going. Van Zant'll be there - it's on the 29th at CB SMith Park.

God bless you too!
Rockin',

Yes, I have been a fan a long time.I have been a fanatic since age 13.And that was a long time ago.I have a lot of stories to tell.So if you dont mind hearing some of them from time to time from an old man,I would be glad to pass them on.As a matter of fact,Johnny and Donnie will be playing right down the street from one of the last places Skynyrd ever played.Yep.Just a stones throw to the west of C.B. Smith park right out on Hollywood/Pines boulevard was a place called the Miami/Hollywood Sportatorium, which is actually in Pembroke Pines.Where it use to stand is now a housing development called Silver Lakes! On 10/15/77 Lynyrd Skynyrd played thier 3rd to the last concert. As you know the crash was on 10/20/77.That's all I have to say about that right now.(one my favorite lines from Forrest Gump)I'll tell ya about that show another time.....Michael

13!! How many Skynyrd concerts have you seen since then? Please do tell me about that show some time.. I'd forgotten they had played so close to us - I knew they played in Tampa in their second to last concert right?

And that's all I've got to say about that.

"Bah, no title" has to be one of your funniest streams of unconsciencenesss (?) in ages!!!

Glad you had a good time with your old friends at the GMO concert!

We tried out that Skype connection pc-to-mobile at home. It was ok, just a little faint but that could have been my mobile's reception. Thought Skype might be a good idea for AE & Nat to help cut down on their inter-continental call bills!

Hope the cold's better now :)

Hey Mal,I would be glad to tell ya.Yep,13,and back then it was 1975.I had started getting into rock and roll about then and Skynyrd has been my favorite ever since.I almost saw one from the torture tour(Skynyrd and CDB) that year but it was not to be.Anyway I would have my chance the next year in 1976 when they played at the Miami Jai-alai fronton with opening act the Atlanta Rhythm Section. This concert was a couple of months before they recorded "One More From The Road"and they were still touring in support of "Gimme Back My Bullets"The concert that I was talking about before from 10/15/77(my second show) was after One More From The Road and most of that show was pretty much made up of and sounded like OMFTR with a few exceptions,That being they played a few songs from this new album that Ronnie said would be coming out on Monday. That album was "Street Survivors"Yep,During the night outside of the OMFTR pretty much note for note they also played "That Smell" "What's Your Name" "I Know A Little" and "Ain't No Good Life". Skynyrd had a very loyal following down here back in them days and set some type of indoor attendance record that night. I remember Ronnie announcing this part way thru the show.It was packed !!!I will never forget that show seeing as it would be the last time I would ever see them and this show above all the others will always stand out in my mind.Allen was wearing that same white shirt that you would see him wearing from time to time that said "Toronto" on the front and he also wears that one on the cover of Steet Survivors. One other thing that always stuck out in my mind from that night was at one point in the show when things where really heating up and the crowd was getting a bit rowdy right before one of the encores and were really pushing hard towards the front(this was back in the old general admission days and there were no assigned seats)Artimus came right out by himself to the very edge of the stage holding some big jugs of liquid of some sort.I was not close enough to tell,But I assumed at the time that it was some type of moonshine or beer or something along those lines. Then it turns out many years later meeting with Artimus and I asked him about that night which I am sure he has a lot of memories of that last tour as well.Being that was the first night of a tour which only lasted a few more days. And sure enough he remembered that occasion and he said that it was so hot and people were getting crushed up at the front. At one point they had to pull some people over the wall.He said he just came out and threw out the jugs that were filled with water to try to help.Talk about swamp music!!Back in them days west of flamingo road was nothing but swamps. And I know cause I grew up right on the edge of it in Pembroke Lakes which ends right at flamingo. We use to sometimes ride our dirtbikes, atc or 4WD out to the Sportatorium.Back in them days there was trails that led all the way out there.I think there was a old tile man out there.A rinker plant, trucking co. and a holiday inn. That was it out on what was called back in them days as Hollywood Blvd no matter how far west you went(out west now they call it Pines Blvd).Anyway, it was a great show and that's all I have to say about that(one time for Mr Gump). It wouldn't be until 1980 before I would get to see SOME of the boys(and 1 girl)again. From 1980-1982 I saw all the Rossington-Collins shows that came to town.In places like The Sunrise Musical Theater and the Miami Baseball Stadium among others.Rossington-Collins Band called it quits.(that's all I have to say about that)Next would be the Allen Collins Band in 1983 at Summers on Ft.Laud.beach that I told you about on a previous post. That would be the only touring they did which was during 1983 and that would be it for ACB they were no more(all I have to say once again.. broken hearted!!)I would have to wait another few years to see them again on the tribute tour in 1987.I went traveling for this one and saw most of thier shows in the southest. The were not scheduled to play South Florida and I got scared I would miss them so I started buying tickets to all the shows I thought I could get to.Little did I know that the tour was gonna carry on for three years(skynyrd didnt know either) and would eventually make it down this way,It was supposed to be a very short tour and that was it.But the tour did so well that it has never stopped and as you know is still going today. They were supporting that whole tour on old material(which was ok by me!!)As you know they did'nt have any new music until 1991 came out in 91 ofcoarse. In 1987 the tribute tour recorded the "Southern By The Grace Of God"album which I missed being on by 1 day. They played in Atlanta 2 nights and the night they recorded I was not there!!I was there the other night!!Missed it by that much!!The night I was there did'nt have all the special guests.(if you look on the album you will see them).Anyway, another highlight was in Jacksonville. Not only was it the hometown reunion but I got to hang out from that point of the tour a little with Gene Odom.Him and his friend Duane were driving from show to show in a van selling there various wares including shirts, hats, buttons, bandanas and other memerobilia. But the best thing they were selling was some of the first printing of his book which I am glad to say was autographed.Years later I would meet up with him again and ask him to autograph another as me and my freinds plum wore out the other(but I still have them both)They were nice guys and invited me back to their hotel room on two occasions. They showed me all the new designs and artwork they were workin on and would be selling soon.Down to earth people.I probably saw about 10 shows during the tribute tour from 1987-1990.Then the big 1991 tour started in support of the new album.By this point they were playin everywhere.Lots of shows in Florida and I would pretty much keep my own touring within the state from here on out. With the exception of a couple of outings to Atlanta that I will get to a little later.Anyway,I saw the guys at all the usual suspects in 91,Miami Tampa Orlando Jacksonville. It was the same for the next few years with the exception of the Freebird Festivals up in Jacksonville which were a little something extra for the Skynyrd fan.I will tell you more about those and the super 3 day weekend in Atlanta(movie premier and more)I have so many great stories about those for next time.Anyway I'm gonna get for now.I guess to answer your question though I would have to say about 60 shows of Skynyrd or Skynyrd related shows..........Owe.ask me to tell you about the APB/Fenwicks show some time as well as the Freebird fest and the Atlanta stuff...Good bye for now and god bless......Michael p.s.since 2001(got married that year also)I have only been to 3 shows.

...holy cats! I don't know what to say about all this! 60 shows... you are SO lucky. I've only been to one so far, and I hope it's the first of many! I've always liked Skynyrd, I mean I've loved Sweet Home Alabama for as long as I can remember, but it's only the past year and a half or two years that I've REALLY gotten into the band, collecting all their music, learning the history, etc.

I'll tell you, it sure feels like longer though.

I just can't believe you were able to see the original band as much as you did, I sure wish I was alive back then, I envy you!

Speaking of "swamp music", we just recently drove through Alligator Alley - it was the first time I'd ever been out there (and I've lived here my whole life). Now THAT is the Florida I love! Where we live, it just ain't the *South*, ya know? Of course, during the whole drive we had Skynyrd on. I turned the volume way up when Swamp Music came on ;o)

Gene Odem sounds like an awesome guy. How many times did you meet him - did he remember you after the first time? I read his book not long ago, I didn't know he'd been in the crash until then.

Aren't we glad the tribute tour never came to an end! Sorry you missed the recording of SBTGOG - you just might've been on the album cover :o/ (Hey I just turned on Kiss Country and it's in the middle of Sweet Home Alabama - it sure is an awesome feeling to hear it on the radio!)

I'd LOVE to hear about the Freebird festivals and movie premiere and APB when you get a chance and feel like typing. Thank you so much for sharing all this with me.

We might be seeing Skynyrd this May, I hope it all works out. They'll be in Cherokee, NC, which isn't too far from Gatlinburg, TN (we go there every year). It would be awesome if we could coordinate our yearly trip with Skynyrd!

Thanks again Michael, I look forward to talking with you more and thank you for taking the time to tell me all this.

Take care and God bless you,
Mal

ps. I hope your wife and mom are feeling better!

Hi Mal, I will be posting more soon as long as you dont mind I will keep on typing. You are just starting your journey which will last a life time!Once you are a Skynyrd fan and you join the family,it will be a ride you will enjoy for many years to come. And it does not matter when you got on the ride..As long as you've gotten on for the ride. You will never want to get off.And most of the die-hards that I know will tell you the same.I just think that it is so cool(and Skynyrd will tell ya too)That there are now like 3 generations of fans.I feel like it is my duty to share all that I have with you and pass it to be carried on and so on and so on!!And yes it seems now a days if you live where we do that you almost have to travel north to be in the south!!I think I have met Gene Odom on 3 or 4 different occasions.I dont remember if he remembers me but,A lot of celebs will say that they remember you to be polite but in fact they meet so many people I sometimes think they do not remember.I have met some other Skynyrd or Skynyrd related personel thru the years like Artimus like on 5 or 6 times amd he always says he remembers me but deep down my gut say's he is just tryin to be polite.I will get into some of the other cool meeting in the future.I must go for now....Have a God Blessed day....Michael

Of course I don't mind, keep those stories comin'! As long as you feel like telling them, I'm listening. Er....reading.

Another good thing about being a Skynyrd fan (new or old) - being a fan of music is a LOT different than being a fan of a movie or something. You can only be obsessed with a certain movie for so long - even if you adore that movie, there always comes a time that you bore of it.

But with music and bands, there's so MUCH of it. There's new stuff happening with it every single day, always new articles to read, new albums coming out, new pictures to find online, etc. Plus, I know I'm not the only one to feel that I can't go a DAY without music! It's one of the greatest things that brings me happiness. Ever since I was a little girl, I listen to music for hours on end, every day.

There's so many Skynyrd albums, and each album has its own different atmosphere or style, so if you get tired of listening to, say, Street Survivors, you can listen to Edge of Forever and it's totally different. It just keeps your interest fresh!!

I'm not saying I ever get tired of listening to any Skynyrd album... Gosh, I hope all of that somehow makes sense! If it doesn't, then, my excuse is that my face hurts and it's 4am, LOL.

Not only all of that, I've noticed that with Skynyrd fans, there's such a deeper love, respect, and appreciation for the band and band-members themselves than with most other bands out there. I've been a fan of other bands, but never has it gone this deep!

Reguarding Gene and Artimus, you just never know!! I know they come into contact with a LOT of people, but if they did in fact remmeber you, how awesome is that!!

You have a God blessed day also, Michael. Thanks again for all the compliments and stories, I appreciate it so much. I hope to see you at the cookoff, I'll be there with my Dad.
